Stormvogel & Wieke @ the Badcuyp

by aran

Last night I went to the Badcuyp, a restaurant and live jazz venue near the Albert Cuyp in Amsterdam. After a good meal with the sweet voice of Brancka (a singer from Groningen, specialized in Brazilian music) in the background, we were promised an experimental jazz session by Stormvogel’s Alter Ego Jazzbarock Consort, featuring Wieke Aurora Garcia. I’m not too big a fan of experimental jazz. I find that they often try too hard to be experimental, and forget it’s music they are supposed to make. But after reading that analog synthesizers as well as a set of bagpipes would be involved, I decided to stick around…

Boy, was I glad I did! Stormvogel’s music was very definitely experimental, it really kept you on edge, but at the same time it was very musical, very accessible. The synths roared and looped and teared through the room, filled in with sax, groovy fast bass and drums. Spoken word style lyrics, actually well written. And when I thought I had seen and heard it all, Wieke whipped out her set of Galician bagpipes. Quite a sight, and quite a sound. The great thing was, though, that I once again realized that there are still strange and weird and wonderful things out there to discover. There is no limit to human creativity, because one person’s creativity can spawn creativity in ten others. As long as there are people left to enjoy these things, all will be well.

Indeed: That’s why I like the Badcuyp so much. No limits! I visited the concert on 9/1 too. Like you I was impressed by this ‘jazzbarock’ of Stormvogel and his friends. Saw him before as a keyboardist in another project Merwijk/Spassov in the Bimhuis feb 2008. Talked to him after the concert. A remarkable guy: No records, only live.
