A couple of years some thieves figured the best way to disconnect an €1800 30″ Apple Cinema Display was by cutting the video cable. Since then, the screen has been sitting defunct in a corner, taking up space. Today, I decided to at least have a go at repairing the beast.

The 24 pin DVI cable was cut off pretty clean, about 10 cm from the connector. The other end wasn’t too long either, as about 20 cm from the cut the DVI cable merges with an USB, Firewire and power cable to join into one big cable that goes right into the monitor. Replacing the entire cable would require taking apart the monitor, which is sealed shut. For a while I figured I would break open the DVI connector and re-attach it. But God knows what I would have found inside there. If anything, probably very little room to use a soldering iron. So I decided to strip the insulation of both ends and solder them together.

Innovatielab ULURU|Beagle besloot begin 2009 een elektrische scooter te gaan gebruiken om duurzame video-items te maken. Het bedrijf nam het voertuig een paar maanden in bruikleen van ZeroBikes Amsterdam, die de kwaliteit en technische ontwikkeling van het voertuig bewaakt.

Scoots
Verschillende ULURUianen rijden op de scooter, zoals Bernd en Miranda. Zij gebruiken het voertuig met name om in de stad op een snelle manier video-items te produceren. Bernd: “We interviewen mensen op straat over hun visie op allerlei ontwikkelingen die in de samenleving spelen.”

Onderwerpen zijn bijvoorbeeld duurzaamheid, openbaar vervoer en biologische voeding. “Wij kunnen samen met onze klanten hierop inspelen met nieuwe producten, diensten en bedrijfsmodellen. We noemen de interview-items ‘scoots’.”

A couple of weeks ago the ULURU|Beagle nerds united and occupied the ULURU Hotel. After moving some plants and furniture around and hooking up power lines and ethernet throughout the room we were pretty much all set.

Besides facilitating ULURU|Beagle’s daily ICT needs (Internet, e-mail, printing, storage, backup, etc), ULURU|Beagle Online serves as a one-stop-shop desk for the online aspect of all ULURU|Beagle projects. Building, running and maintaining the ULURU|Beagle websites as well as the websites of the various spin-outs, and creating concepts and prototypes for future websites and online platforms. Putting together people with knowledge of the different aspects of web technology, we are able to use and combine each others expertise to fully exploit the possibilities of the Internet.

Came back wednesday from Cologne: tired but satisfied. ULURU|Beagle has designed a (communication) concept on and around events for the Dutch Games Association.

It started on Gamescom Cologne, one of the bigger game events in Europe. In September the whole circus will go to Tokyo. Followed by San Francisco (in March).

In a business area of relatively many closed stands, DGA stood out with an open interactive area as their temporary home base in Cologne. A fine result, taking a tide timeframe and budget into account.

I have to say, the German Culture was more than OK: people muy simpático, hardy breakfasts, great tattoo’s!

Last weekend I attended Hacking At Random 2009; a four-day open air hacking festival that is held once every four years under a different name somewhere in the Netherlands. The term hacking should really be taken in it’s broadest meaning: not just breaking into computer systems but any creative use or modification of technology beyond its original design and intent. Add to that some talks on the sociological aspects of the Internet, privacy, copyright and free speech issues and you get a bit of an idea of what HAR2009 was about.

De meeste mensen e-mailen en sms’en er flink op los. Ze I-potten, sporen op straat een restaurant op via hun gsm en speuren via Google Earth de wereld af. Twitteren? Geen probleem. De techniek staat voor niks en de moderne mens past zich er naadloos op aan. Gek genoeg geldt dat niet voor het maken van iets simpels als een pasfoto in een pasfotohokje.

Juist dit leidt tot problemen. Tenminste, dat begrijp ik van de baliemedewerker tijdens een bezoek aan het gemeentehuis in mijn woonplaats.

This month I decided to start a new initiative together with ULURU 100% Brand: Naked Bits. ULURU’s goal is to encourage and support entrepreneurship. This allows the creation of new spin-offs next to ULURU/Beagle. Spin-offs with a different focus and different proposition that can profit from working closely together with ULURU/Beagle. So I stepped out of ULURU/Beagle to start a distinct offering: Basically an IT lab in which companies can play with technology.

Elektrisch vervoer een boost geven, zoals de gemeente Amsterdam voorstaat? Prachtig, maar waarom pas in 2040 heel Amsterdam op stroom laten rijden? ULURU liep in 2005 op de actualiteit vooruit met een goed gefundeerd plan om – samen met partners – elektrisch vervoer aantrekkelijk te maken en goed in de markt te zetten.

Ons concept sluit goed aan bij de actualiteit, want innovatie op het gebied van elektrisch vervoer krijgt steeds meer draagvlak in het bedrijfsleven en het Nederlandse politieke landschap, zo werd dinsdag in de Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam duidelijk. De gemeente kondigde daar een totaalaanpak aan voor modern en schoon vervoer.

ULURU blijft in beweging. Dat laten we ook op de weg zien. Voorheen was onze ULURU-eend een opvallende verschijning, tegenwoordig zijn we super trots op onze elektrische scooter.

De medewerkers van ULURU en Beagle keken vandaag vol bewondering naar het nieuwe voertuig. Blauw, zilver en beige van kleur, prachtig opgeleukt met de ULURU-letters en witte vlammen.
