Het verhaal van de ULURU scooter

by evert

1235745513nscooter_quellijnULURU blijft in beweging.

How Twitter spreads the news on a plane crash

by dirk

nipp-1
Today I was amazed by how the story about the plane crash at Schiphol evolved on the Internet. One of our colleagues was first to tell us about it, some 10 minutes after it happened. She was called by her boyfriend who works for the local TV here. The first thing I thought when I heard it was to check Twitter.

Interactive dinner at Inamo, London

by sylvia

inamo_0810_0101Last Friday I had a high tech dinner experience at the Inamo restaurant in Soho, London. One of the restaurant’s unique features is the combination of technology with having dinner. Via projectors in the ceiling your tabletop is projected with their Asian fusion menu. You can use your personal touch panel to interact with the (kitchen) staff and order food and beverages yourself. Each menu item is displayed on the plate in front of you. With a little help of the staff it was actually quite easy to navigate: similar to navigation on your computer.

MoMo #9: Mobile Gaming

by dirk

iPhone dominationI haven’t missed out on a single MoMo Amsterdam up to now. Already 9! The crowd and atmosphere were as usual very vibrant. The Rode Hoed on the Keizersgracht full up to the balcony, with young ‘mobilistas’ in their late 20s and early 30s, blogging on their MacBooks or twittering on their iPhone, amazing how Apple has now completely taken over the creative crowd. Quite a few G1 phones were also spotted, so this is not your average population in terms of market penetration. :-)

Bridging the real world to the Internet

by dirk

iobridge control moduleA friend on Twitter drew my attention to a very promising project: ioBridge. This simple set of hardware modules makes it possible to control physical equipment from the computer. The big plus of ioBridge are its simplicity (you get some javascript widgets that make controlling the equipment really easy) and the price (for $100.- you can get started).

Dusseldorf and how light positively affects energy hormones

by mick

Yesterday Philippe and I visit the E-Plus HQ in Dusseldorf. We met Santa Claus on the Hauptbahnhof, and we drove trough the Königsallee noted for both the canal that runs along the boulevard’s centre, as well as for the luxury retail shopping venues

Before we did our meeting I was waked up by a wonderful Dusseldorf sun. Slightly like at home were my Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock does the same. Research shows that light stimulates the senses, giving you more energy and helping you to feel less lethargic – that is why it is so much easier to rise during the summer months as opposed to the dark winter months. As the light falls on your eyes, a message is sent to your brain that positively affects the production of cortisol, the energy hormone. This means that at your required wake-up time your hormones are better balanced and you’ll feel more energetic right from the start of the day. Although the function is fairly simple it works well. I hate mornings and I don’t particularly like winter so I was keen to give this a try. It basically slowly wakes you up by increasing the light intensity over a 30 minute period, this works really well. The light itself is very powerful, you can alter the settings to any intensity you want. I picked the highest so that at the end of the 30 minutes it is like having sunlight streaming through the window.

And for those who don’t have Christmas plans, Dusseldorf’s annual Christmas market includes 250 festive stalls offering everything you need for under (or on) the Christmas, be worth it!

Reizen met de OV chipkaart: random kosten

by dirk

Open Mac surgery

by aran

When I started working for ULURU earlier this year, I had never really worked with Apple Macs before. Sure, I’d checked my email on a friend’s IMac, but that was about it. ULURU however, is Mac only, so I was handed a sweet MacBook Pro and a nice Cinema Display “because you need that as a web developer” (I didn’t mention I’ve been programming just fine for years on a 15″ monitor) and was on my way to discover Mac territory. Barely half a year later and my job description has expanded to network administrator / support guy. Most of the people I’m supposed to help have more experience with a Mac than I have :)

MoMo #8: How will mobile influence our lives?

by dirk
How about Bruce Sterling as a preacher?

How about Bruce Sterling as a preacher?

Another great MoMo Amsterdam event yesterday afternoon! The quality of the speakers was high and they gave us quite some food for thought. The role of mobile in society was at the center of the discussions.

A remarkable afternoon ended with a remarkable Bruce Sterling climbing up the pulpit of the Rode Hoed and preaching us about the development of mobile technology: “As developers of mobile applications, you are living on a volcano and guess where the ashes will fall when it explodes?” (more…)

‘Gebruiksgemak virtuele wereld moet beter’

by evert
